Student Data & Privacy
Your Student’s Data Privacy: Our Commitment
In an increasingly digital world, protecting your child’s personal information is one of our highest priorities. Our district fully complies with the Student Online Personal Protection Act (SOPPA), an Illinois law designed to ensure that student data is collected safely and used exclusively for educational purposes.
What is SOPPA?
SOPPA provides parents and guardians with greater control over the data collected by educational technology companies. It guarantees that:
-
Student data is never sold or rented.
-
Targeted advertising based on student profiles is strictly prohibited.
-
Data is only used for beneficial educational purposes.
Our Evaluation Process
We don’t just "click agree." Before any digital tool, app, or website enters our classrooms, it undergoes a rigorous vetting process. Our technology team evaluates every platform to ensure it meets our high standards for security and privacy.
A Data Privacy Agreement (DPA) must be signed by the vendor before the tool is approved. This legal contract mandates that the provider follows strict security protocols and provides the district with transparency regarding what data is collected and how it is protected.
To ensure your child’s information remains secure, our district utilizes the Student Data Privacy Consortium (SDPC). The SDPC is a national collaborative that allows school districts to share vetted privacy agreements, ensuring student data protection.
What is the SDPC?
Think of the SDPC as a centralized library of legal protections. It provides a standardized framework that school districts across the country use to hold educational technology companies accountable. By using the SDPC Resource Registry, our district can see which companies have already agreed to strict privacy standards in other districts and states.
Your Rights as a Parent
Transparency is key to our partnership with you. Through our SDPC portal, you can:
-
View a list of all approved operators and the specific data elements they collect.
-
Review the contracts we have signed with these providers.
