Message From The Curriculum Director

As a school community, our goal is to provide students with meaningful and engaging learning experiences and to educate and nurture them to become productive and responsible citizens. When schools and families work together, student success is greatly enhanced.

District 7’s curriculum is fully aligned with the Illinois Learning Standards, ensuring that all students receive a high-quality education that is both rigorous and developmentally appropriate. Instruction is delivered through integrated units of study, which are designed to make learning relevant and connected across subject areas.

We also incorporate the Social Emotional Learning (SEL) Standards and the English Language Development (ELD) Standards to support the growth of the whole child—academically, socially, and emotionally.

Our curriculum includes:

  • English Language Arts (ELA): Reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills taught through a variety of texts and genres.
  • Spanish Language Arts (SLA): Reading, writing, speaking, and listening skills taught through a variety of texts and genres.  This applies to students who participate in the Dual Language Program.
  • Mathematics: Emphasis on conceptual understanding, problem-solving, and application of math in real-life situations.
  • Science: Hands-on inquiry-based learning aligned with the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
Social Studies: Exploration of history, culture, geography, and civics with an emphasis on critical thinking and global awareness.
  • Social Emotional Learning: Lessons integrated into the school day that promote self-awareness, decision-making, and positive relationships.
  • English Language Development: Targeted instruction and support for multilingual learners to ensure full access to academic content.

Additional instruction is provided in:

  • Fine Arts: Students learn dance, media arts, music, theatre, and visual arts by focusing on creativity, performance, thinking about art, connecting it to life and culture, and using materials safely and responsibly.
  • Physical Education and Health: Students learn how to move their bodies, stay healthy and fit, understand how their bodies work, work well with others, and make good choices to support their health.
  • Technology and Digital Citizenship: Teach students to use technology safely, responsibly, and effectively, making smart choices online and respecting others.

Teachers use evidence-based strategies, differentiation, and technology integration to engage students and meet individual learning needs. Authentic learning experiences and real-world applications help students see the relevance of what they are learning, fostering a deeper understanding.

We are committed to providing every student with access to high-quality learning materials, up-to-date technology, and supportive learning environments. Intervention and enrichment opportunities are available to ensure that each child is challenged and supported appropriately.

As the Director of Curriculum, it is my pleasure to serve our students, staff, and families. If you ever have questions or concerns about your child’s learning experience, I welcome you to contact me directly.
