Junior High Future City Team wins 1st place in the Chicago Regional Future City Competition!

Our Future City Team took first place in the Chicago Regional Future City Competition and also represented the State of Illinois in the National Finals in March. Future City is one of our school clubs that was offered virtually this school year.  The Future City program combines math, science, engineering, and technology (STEM) to identify potential problems and come up with solutions.  It allows for creative thinking and an opportunity to design a model, do complex research to expand each student’s knowledge and thinking, and speak publicly. This year the regional Future City competition theme was Living on the Moon.

Our team of 10 students created
Novis. Their model city was not on the surface of moon, but underneath it.  They created a futuristic lunar city that used the resources of the moon to made life sustainable in space.  An essay, a project plan, and a presentation video was developed, practiced and recorded through the school.  During the virtual competition, a panel of engineers asked our team detailed questions about how their city functioned and how they applied what they learned.

Mr. Dan West, our STEM Engineering teacher, sponsored our club and program.  He shared, “I couldn't be more proud of this team and all the hard work they've accomplished this year."  After 7 months of being committed to designing and creating their city, our team reached their goal.  Julia, one of our team members, said it all “My experience in Future City this year was amazing. Even though it was different and hard at times it was very rewarding.” We are extremely proud of our Future City Team!
